Port Klang: Ms Teh's notes on the Northport side, South Port (Southpoint) and Telok Gong

Port Klang has three port areas: Northport and Southpoint on the mainland and Westports on Pulau Indah. Mainland industrial property sits in older areas such as Telok Gong, Pandamaran, Selat Klang Utara and Pelabuhan Klang Utara (Northport side), giving factories and warehouses short truck runs to Northport. In Malay the port is Pelabuhan Klang; it was called Port Swettenham until 1972.

Port Klang's three port areas

Port Klang is made up of Northport, Southpoint and Westports. Northport and Southpoint are on the mainland and are run by Northport (Malaysia) Bhd of the MMC Group, whose concession was extended by 30 years in 2018. Westports is on Pulau Indah.

In 2025 the port handled a record 15.14 million TEU: 11.33 million through Westports and 3.8 million through Northport. Port Klang ranked 10th in Lloyd's List Top 100 Ports, and the government's 2026 target is 15.37 million TEU.

South Port (Southpoint), Port Klang

South Port is the original port. The Malayan Railway opened it on 15 September 1901 as Port Swettenham, and until the Port Swettenham Authority was formed in 1963 it was the only port in Klang; the whole port took the name Port Klang in 1972. Northport (Malaysia) Bhd now runs it as Southpoint, its terminal for conventional cargo, alongside Northport. Southpoint was declared a Free Commercial Zone in February 2004.

It has eight berths, numbered 1 to 7A. Berths 1 to 4 are 9 to 10.5 m deep and take ships of up to 40,000 displacement tonnes; berths 5 to 7A are about 6 m deep. Five break bulk berths line a 546 m terminal. Cargo is liquid bulk such as palm oil, latex and bitumen, dry bulk, steel coils, vehicles, machinery and project cargo, much of it short-sea trade with Indonesia and East Malaysia. Container lines use Northport and Westports instead.

For a factory or warehouse, South Port matters if you move break bulk or liquid cargo. The nearest industrial land is in Port Klang town itself and the older estates around it: Selangor's 2025 list puts Kawasan Perindustrian Sobena Jaya, Black Water, Kampung Pendamar and Pelabuhan Klang under Pandamaran, and lists Jalan Pelabuhan Utara, Pelabuhan Utara and Bandar Sultan Suleiman on the Northport side. Addresses use postcode 42000 Pelabuhan Klang.

Mainland industrial areas

The older industrial areas of the Klang municipality cluster around Port Klang town and Northport. Northport itself was put at about 15 km from Klang town in a 2018 EdgeProp feature.

  • Telok (Teluk) Gong: port-linked heavy industry with 274 licensed factories, 47 of them in plastics.
  • Pandamaran: older industrial area near Port Klang town, on the KESAS route towards Pulau Indah.
  • Selat Klang Utara and Pelabuhan Klang Utara (Northport side): older municipal industrial areas on the Northport side.
  • Further inland, Bukit Raja, Meru and Kapar are covered under the Klang page.

Telok Gong and the zero discharge policy

Telok Gong has been under close scrutiny over pollution. In 2025 it became the first industrial area in Selangor under a Zero Discharge Policy.

If you are buying or renting a factory there, check early with the authorities and your consultant what your process can discharge and what approvals the unit already holds. This matters most for plastics, chemical and other wet processes.

Northport side or Westport side?

The two sides suit different operations. The mainland side puts you close to Northport, Port Klang town and the older Klang industrial belt. The island side puts you next to Westports, the larger terminal, in newer estates such as Pulau Indah Industrial Park, where land is leasehold.

Start with which terminal your shipping lines use and where your goods go after the port. The Westport vs Northport guide walks through the comparison, and the Pulau Indah page covers the island.

Indicative rents and what to check

JPPH-registered factory tenancies in Klang and Port Klang had a median rent of RM1.44 psf a month over the 24 months to July 2026 (662 tenancies): terrace RM1.44, semi-detached RM1.76 and detached RM1.24. Older stock can vary a lot in condition, so the unit itself matters more than the median.

In older areas, check the roof and drainage, power supply, floor loading, and whether container trucks can reach the loading bay. See warehouses for rent and factories for rent.

ECRL and port rail

The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) was 94% complete in July 2026. Passenger services are due to start in January 2027 and cargo operations in early 2028. The 25 km spur from Jalan Kastam to Northport and Westports has been upgraded to double track, which links both port areas to the east coast by rail.
