Westport or Northport: five checks before you choose which side of Port Klang for your warehouse

Ms Teh Seok Hoon, PEA 4006. Updated

Pick the side your containers already move through. Westports, on Pulau Indah, handled 11.33 million TEU in 2025 and has the Port Klang Free Zone next door. Northport, on the mainland near Port Klang town, handled 3.8 million TEU and is closer to north Klang, Shah Alam and the NKVE. Ask your forwarder for last year's terminal split before you shortlist a warehouse.

Is Port Klang the same as Westport?

No. Port Klang is Malaysia's main port, on the Selangor coast west of Klang town. It has three main areas: Northport, Westports and Southpoint. In 2025 the port as a whole handled a record 15.14 million TEU and ranked 10th in Lloyd's List's top 100 ports. FactoryHub's full comparison of the Westport, Northport and PKFZ industrial zones sets out the industrial areas around each terminal.

Westports is run by Westports Malaysia Sdn Bhd under Westports Holdings Berhad. Northport and Southpoint are run by Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, part of the MMC Group. When a shipping line or forwarder says Port Klang, ask which terminal, because it changes where your warehouse should be.

How big is each terminal?

Westports is the larger of the two by a wide margin. It handled 11.33 million TEU in 2025, up 3.2% on the year, against 3.8 million TEU at Northport. Transshipment, where containers move between ships without leaving the port, accounted for 8.41 million TEU of Port Klang's total.

Westports' concession was extended in December 2023 to 2082, with plans to raise capacity from 14 million to 27 million TEU through new terminals CT10 to CT17. Northport's concession was extended by 30 years in 2018. The Westports expansion guide covers the timeline.

The Westport side: Pulau Indah

Westports sits on Pulau Indah, an island in Klang District about 25 km from Klang town. Next to it is Pulau Indah Industrial Park, a leasehold industrial township whose developer, a Selangor state agency, has worked on the island since 1994. The Edge reported the developer's tract at 5,324 acres in 2009, with 3,225 acres planned for industry. Also next door is the Port Klang Free Zone, about 1,000 acres gazetted as a free zone in 2004. The same developer's newer SBB Industrial Park is also on the island.

Road access is by the Pulau Indah Expressway, an extension of KESAS, and the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE) towards Putrajaya. Tenants in the industrial park include logistics operators, food and flour mills, sugar and edible oil refiners, chemical and packaging companies.

The Northport side: mainland Port Klang and north Klang

Northport is on the mainland, about 15 km from Klang. The older industrial areas around it include Pelabuhan Klang Utara, Selat Klang Utara, Pandamaran and Telok Gong, a port-linked heavy industry zone. Further inland are Kapar, Meru and Bandar Bukit Raja, which have newer and larger sites.

Telok Gong became Selangor's first industrial area under a zero discharge policy in 2025 after scrutiny over pollution, so check what is permitted before you commit to a site there. See the Port Klang and Klang area pages for more on each location.

How to choose

The terminal your containers use matters more than the general area. Trucking between the two sides adds time and cost on every box, and port tariffs at Westports are rising in steps from 2025 to 2027. Before you shortlist sites, check these points.

  • Which terminal do your main shipping lines call at? Ask your forwarder for last year's split.
  • Do you need a free zone or bonded set-up? The Port Klang Free Zone is on the Westport side.
  • Where are your customers and suppliers? North Klang, Shah Alam and the NKVE corridor favour the Northport side; Putrajaya and the SKVE corridor favour Pulau Indah.
  • Will you use rail? ECRL cargo services to Port Klang are planned from early 2028 on a double-tracked spur serving both Northport and Westports.
  • What tenure and size do you need? Pulau Indah Industrial Park is leasehold; some mainland areas have freehold options.

What is coming on each side

On the Westport side, Westports' CT10 is expected to begin operations in the third quarter of 2028. The Cabinet has also approved a third Port Klang terminal on Carey Island, next to Westports, to be built in phases over close to 20 years. The Port Klang Free Zone plans to offer open land on leases of up to 30 years and redevelop older blocks into multi-storey warehouses.

Both sides gain from the ECRL rail link, with cargo services planned from early 2028. For current warehouses on either side, see warehouses for rent.

Questions buyers and tenants ask

Is Port Klang and Westport the same?

No. Port Klang is the whole port. Westports is one of its terminals, on Pulau Indah. The others are Northport and Southpoint, on the mainland, run by Northport (Malaysia) Bhd.

Which is bigger, Westport or Northport?

Westports. In 2025 it handled 11.33 million TEU, against 3.8 million TEU at Northport, out of 15.14 million TEU for Port Klang as a whole.

Where is Port Klang?

Port Klang is on the coast of Selangor, west of Klang town in Klang District. Northport is on the mainland about 15 km from Klang, and Westports is on Pulau Indah, about 25 km from Klang town.

Is the Port Klang Free Zone near Westport or Northport?

Westport. The Port Klang Free Zone covers about 1,000 acres on Pulau Indah and is managed by PKFZ Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of the Port Klang Authority.

Which side is better for a warehouse?

The side your containers move through. If most of your boxes go through Westports, a site in Pulau Indah cuts trucking time. If you use Northport or serve customers in north Klang and Shah Alam, the mainland side may suit better.
