What PKFZ is
The Port Klang Free Zone is a free commercial and industrial zone used mainly for international cargo distribution, manufacturing and customs administration. It is run by PKFZ Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of the Port Klang Authority.
It covers about 1,000 acres on Pulau Indah and was gazetted as an integrated free zone in 2004. It was first managed by Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) of Dubai; management passed to the local company in 2007.
What space is available
Figures reported in July 2026: the industrial zone is 384.45 hectares, of which 254.14 hectares is leased. Light industrial units (LIUs) cover 66.77 hectares and are about 65% taken, on 1 to 3-year leases aimed at smaller businesses. The commercial zone is 86% reactivated.
PKFZ plans to convert about 20 acres of LIUs into open-land leases of up to 30 years, and to redevelop older blocks into multi-storey and automated warehouses. For an operator that wants a long-term base inside the zone, those open-land leases are the option to watch.
Who uses PKFZ
PKFZ's target sectors are oil and gas, food processing, rubber products, building materials, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), logistics and light manufacturing.
It contributed about 442,000 TEU in 2025, roughly 3% of Port Klang's record 15.14 million TEU. PKFZ has said it is ready to support the planned third Port Klang terminal on Carey Island.
PKFZ, bonded warehouses and ordinary warehouses
People searching for a bonded warehouse in Port Klang usually want space where goods can be held under customs control before duty is settled. A unit inside PKFZ is one route. A licensed warehouse outside the zone, for example in Pulau Indah Industrial Park, is another.
Which suits you depends on your customs arrangements and licences, so confirm with your customs agent before committing to either. If an ordinary warehouse will do, the choice outside the zone is wider: see warehouses for rent and warehouses for sale.
Renting in or near PKFZ
Leases for light industrial units inside the zone are taken directly with PKFZ. For warehouses in the surrounding Klang and Port Klang estates, factoryhub.my showed a typical asking rent of RM1.60 to RM1.90 psf a month in October 2026 (median RM1.80, 153 listings), a useful yardstick when comparing a PKFZ quote.
Ms Teh handles industrial units around the zone in Pulau Indah and Port Klang and can compare them with your PKFZ option on size, power and lease length.
